Michael Jordan erhält Zwei-Jahres-Vertrag
Das zweite Comeback von Michael "Air" Jordan in der nordamerikanischen Basketball-Profiliga (NBA) ist perfekt. Der 38 Jahre alte Megastar hat über seine Management-Agentur seine Rückkehr für zwei Jahre als Profi für die Washington Wizards verkündet. (Quelle: sport1.de)

"Ich komme zurück als Spieler zu dem Spiel, das ich liebe", hieß es in dem am Dienstag verbreiteten Statement. In der ersten Saison kassiert er das Mindestsalär von einer Million Dollar, dass er allerdings für die Opfer der Terroranschläge von New York und Washington spenden wird.

Das erste Saisonspiel wird der Profi mit der Trikotnummer 23 am 30. Oktober in seiner Geburtsstadt New York bei den Knicks bestreiten. Sein erster öffentlicher Auftritt ist am 1. Oktober geplant, wenn sich die gesamte Wizards-Mannschaft den Medienpräsentiert.

Reichster Sportler der Welt

Einen Tag später beginnt in seiner Heimatstadt Wilmington im US-Bundesstaat North Carolina die Saisonvorbereitung. Ursprünglich wollte Jordan seine Rückkehr sechs Tage eher verkünden. Doch die geplante Pressekonferenz fiel wegen der Anschläge in den USA aus.

Um auf Korbjagd gehen zu können, musste Jordan das Präsidentenamt bei den Wizards aufgeben und seine jeweils zehnprozentigen Eigentumsanteile an dem Verein sowie am Eishockey-Club der Washington Capitals verkaufen. Wenn er seine Karriere wieder beendet, kann er die Anteile von Capitals-Besitzer Ted Leonsis zurückerwerben.

Der als bester Basketball-Spieler aller Zeiten gepriesene Jordan, der sechs Mal mit den Chicago Bulls das NBA-Championat (1991-93/1996-98) gewann, hatte am 13. Januar 1999 zum zweiten Mal seine glanzvolle Karriere beendet. Ein Jahr später kehrte "His Airness" als Präsident und Miteigentümer bei den Wizards ins Basketball-Geschäft zurück.

1995 erstes Comeback

Das erste Mal war der reichste Sportler der Welt mit einem geschätzten Vermögen von rund 400 Millionen Dollar am 6. Oktober 1993 zurückgetreten, weil er glaubte, dass er sich nicht mehr verbessern könnte. Anschließend versuchte er sich als Baseball-Profi bei den Chicago White Sox.

Am 18. März 1995 startete Jordan bei den Bulls sein erstes NBA-Comeback. In seiner vorerst letzten Saison 1998 war er mit einem Jahressalär von 33,14 Millionen Dollar bestbezahlter Profi.

Wizards zuletzt drittschlechtestes Team

Jordan hatte vor sechs Monaten wieder mit dem zielgerichteten Training begonnen hatte. Seine Übungseinheiten mit anderen NBA-Profis absolvierte er in Chicago unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit. Noch einen Championsring zu gewinnen, sei nicht sein Ziel.

"Ich bin erwachsen geworden und habe gelernt, dass mit gewinnen nicht nur die Meisterschaft gemeint ist", erklärte Jordan. Wenn er mit den Wizards - in der vorigen Saison drittschlechtestes Team (19 Siege/63 Niederlagen) - in die Playoffs einziehen würde, wäre das für ihn wie ein erneuter Meisterschafts-Triumph.

Revere,MA- Coach Byrnes and co. has put together a team that should be one of the Nation's top clubs. Does that suprise you?? The Winchendon School, which competes in the New England Prep School Athletic Council, which is the Nation's top league looks to win its second league title in five years.

This year's Winchendon School team is different from years past. Instead of being overloaded at every position, this years team has about 4 high major players, and a lot of other mid major and low major prospects.

Six foot- eleven inch Junior Sani Ibraham(Nassarawa,Nigeria) leads the way. Ibraham(NE Prep's #1 Junior) is without a doubt one of the nation's top juniors. He is athletic, a shot blocking machine, and possesses NBA foot work in the post.

Brian Carter(6'11 Rockwood,MI), is another book end that coach Byrnes has at his disposal. Carter has great foot work on the low, mid, and high post. His long arms allows him to get a piece of almost every shot attemted. Brian is committed to TCU and should be a big help to the Green Wave.

Rounding out the three headed monster is another TCU signee, Darrius Manciel(Detroit,MI).Manciel, is yet another 6'11 big man to round out one of the biggest front courts in the country.Darrius, finishes well around the basket and can run the floor. One of his better traits is hs ability to pass out of the low post or face up from the high post and feed the low block.

Guards

After losing Marshall Strickland(Transferred to Dematha), coach Byrnes brought reloaded his back court. Jeremiah King( 6'2 Passaic,NJ) is a UMASS signee, who figures to see some time at the point guard spot. He can slash to the basket and finish, as well as being able to pull up in traffic from anywhere 18 feet and in. The throw back player of the region has to be Dustin Hellinga(Centerville,VA). Hellinga, is a 6 foot 3 bull of a shooting guard. He can shoot it from anywhere in the gym and can also finish in traffic. Dustin is a warrior that has the ability to play the shooting guard or small forward position. He is another mid/ high major sleeper that every Atlantic-10 school should be looking at.

Next is 5'11 Mighty Mouse, Morris Hall(Detroit,MI). Hall is extremly quick and aggressive. He defends 94 feet on the court and penetrates the lane very well. Another guard who impressed me was 6'1 point guard,Tim Stevens( Rochester,NY).Stevens, is a very consistant shooter who can stroke it from mid range and deeep as well. I also was impressed with his unselfishness and court vision.

Last, but certainly not least is one of the Nation's top kept secrets. His name is Emmanuel Messy. He is from Ontario, Canada and he is one of the most athletic wings in the country. He is 6 foot 7, very strong and jumps out of the gym. Messy, slashes very well and can rebound well out of the small forward spot. He is no question one of the top junior small forwards in the country.

Winchendon, although overall isn't as talented as years past does have many players that can log minutes off of the bench. The first name that comes to mind is Demario Eddins(Chicago,IL). Eddins, is a 6 foot 6 athletic wing that slashes to the rim and can finish. Domenik Maier(Feldkirch,Austria), is a 6'1 spot up shooting threat with three point range. Another junior to watch is 6'0 SG Andres Sandoval(Marlborough,MA). I was impressed with his athletic ability, and since he will be there for two years, should be a talent to watch for next year. Rounding out the bench is 6'5 combo forward, Michael Lytle(New York,NY). Lytle is a strong hard working forward, that can bang around and rebound well for his size.

Overall

I expect the Winchendon School to compete for the NEPSAC championship this year without a doubt. I like the teams chemistry and its blue collar attitude. Coach Byrnes and his staff of Alex Magay and Kevin Martin should have a team that hopefully will be cutting down the nets in March. With the talent that they have, I wouldn't expect anythingelse.

Bruno Sundov, ehem. Schüler der Winchendon School, spielt jetzt bei den Indiana Pacers. Zuvor spielte er für die Dallas Maverics, jedoch lediglich 3 Spiele wegen einer schwereren Verletzung.

Unser USA-Student Domenik Maier, spielt seit letzter Saison in der ersten Mannschaft der Winchendon School. "Wir haben auch heuer wieder eine ausgezeichnete Mannschaft. Da derzeit noch nicht offiziell trainiert werden darf (also keine Systeme dürfen geübt werden), wird während den Trainings eigentlich fast nur gespielt. Zu unseren Trainings kommen stets 3-6 College-Trainer. Vorgestern war sogar der Trainer von UCLA da. Wenn man bedenkt, dass der extra von Kalifornien nach Boston fliegt, nur um unsern Spielern im Training zuzuschauen...", so Domenik Maier.

The Boston College men's basketball team is currently preparing for a 12-day European tour that will include exhibition games in France and Switzerland.

The Eagles began practicing for the tour on Saturday, August 12. The team will depart Boston for Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, August 17. Boston College will play six games on the trip -- five in Switzerland and one in France.

The team will spend two nights in Zurich; three nights in Vevey, Switzerland; three nights in Lyon, France; and two nights in Nice, France.

The team will return to Chestnut Hill on Monday, August 28.

The nine players returning from the 1999-2000 team will make the trip overseas. The three incoming freshmen are not eligible to participate.
